Have you ever cut a bolt only to discover the threads
have been damaged and won’t accept the nut? You don’t need a
machinist’s die to re-thread the bolt. Next time, twist the nut onto
the bolt before you cut it. Use a file to ease the cut edges of the
bolt. This will make it a little easier to re-thread the nut later. When you remove the nut it will repair the
damage to the threads.
