Woodworking Gift Ideas

Where can you find woodworking gifts?
At WoodZone.com of course! We’ve put together “gift ideas” and “gift collections” to help you select the perfect gift with ease. Even better, we offer these woodworking gift ideas and collections based on skill level and at a discount!

Are you looking for a gift for a woodworker? We’re here to help! We’ve put together this guide to help you select the perfect birthday, Christmas, or any occasion gift for a woodworker on your gift list. In the first part of this article we discuss how to select a gift for a woodworker. In the second section we provide a variety of “gift packages” we’ve prepared to make gift selection as simple as possible.

Ask yourself the following questions before selecting a gift for the woodworker on your gift list:

What are their woodworking interests?
The first thing to consider when purchasing a gift for a woodworker is the type of woodworking they enjoy. You can probably find out the answer to this question just by asking them or someone that might know. To help you identify their interests; the most common types of woodworking are: furniture making, carving, woodturning, scroll sawing, intarsia, etc.

Often woodworkers will start out with one of these woodworking categories and expand to others as they develop their skills. Many woodworkers that have years of experience will then settle into one or two woodworking disciplines and specialize in these areas.

GIFT IDEA! - You can find out of if they have an interest in a new area of woodworking and purchase a gift that helps them expand their skills. We’ve put together starter gift packages to help make this easier. (see below)

How big is their woodworking shop? Do they have a shop?
Another thing to consider is the size of their shop. Some woodworking projects such as carving can be practiced in the smallest of apartments with minimal expense and noise. Other woodworking disciplines, such as furniture making, require a minimum of a garage-size shop and a number of large power tools.

GIFT IDEA! - Woodworkers who have fully established shops can benefit from measuring tools and devices that make setting up the equipment easier.

What is their woodworking skill level? Beginner? Intermediate? Advanced?
The second consideration is their skill level. Are they just starting out in woodworking?

Beginner Level Gifts:
Beginning woodworkers need knowledge first, tools second. You might consider educational products such as woodworking books or even better – woodworking videos. The nice thing about giving woodworking videos is that they are a lot less common than books and the chances of duplicating something they already have is a lot less. A magazine subscription makes a nice year-long gift. Books and videos are great and can be targeted at their specific area of interest.

Intermediate Level Gifts:
Most woodworkers fall into the “intermediate” category. They have skills in certain disciplines and have a number of tools. For these people you might consider one of our “accessory” gift collections. For example – furniture makers use a lot of hand tools to help them out. A nice collection of measuring tools such as our rosewood measuring collection or saw setup tools are ideal. Wood turners might appreciate a “Pen Kit Starter Package” or a book on the subject to help them enter into a new area of woodturning.

Intermediate Level  Gift Packages:

Advanced Level Gifts:
Advanced woodworkers are tougher to buy for. They have probably specialized in one area of woodworking and have many of the tools that they need. The tools that they don’t have are typically very expensive. A nice boxed set of woodworking chisels or carving tools is a good gift idea. Even if you duplicate chisels they may already have many woodworkers will appreciate having an extra chisel handy when carving, as they don’t have to stop carving to sharpen the only chisel they have. This is a nice idea because it’s hard to justify to you as a woodworker to buy multiple chisels.

HELP! I STILL NEED HELP!

Another option is to ask your woodworking friend to visit our “Gift Registry” online at: http://www.woodzone.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=WISHLIST
and select a few items. They simply add items to their “registry” just like shopping in an online store.

You can then visit their registry and select what you would like to purchase. This assures that you are getting a gift your woodworker has personally selected based on their interest and woodworking need for the items on their registry.
